Overview

By combining technologies from the rubber & plastics industries and food & pharma industries with Maelstrom's unique FDM designs, the UML can process highly viscous materials up to and including solid rubber.  Energy applied by rotational shear and pressure drops across internal nozzles provide extremely effective dispersion.  The UML is ideal for applications requiring the blending and de-agglomeration of powders in viscous fluids.

To ensure that the applied energy does not damage the mixture, the rotor and stator components can be liquid-cooled for precise temperature control.  Typically, between two and six mixing stages are provided along the machine length, with intermediate extrusion pumping to raise pressure locally.  Multiple dosing points can be  provided and the UML can be easily coupled to an EMT twin-screw feeder within an inline process installation.

Hygienic and flameproof options are available to ensure that the UML can be used in a wide range of applications from food and pharmaceuticals to rubber and plastics.

Easy configuration

In applications needing quick and easy alteration of the mixing setup for different recipes, UML machines can be provided with interchangeable mixing rings for stress variation.  It is also possible to inject fluid streams at each mixing point along the machine for multi-stage reactions.  As each mixing stage is preceded by its own pumping element, the system pressures are kept low, meaning that inter-stage dosing can be done at low pressure.

Description

Designed for intensive mixing and dispersion in high viscosity fluids, UML machines comprise a number of extrusion and mixing stages driven by a powerful geared motor.  Configured in the same way as a single screw extruder, materials are fed into the machine radially and exit axially with additional liquid dosing ports along the length of the machine, if required.

Strong construction, low speed operation and the use of high strength steels make the UML an ideal production machine for inline operations.  Quality gearmotors and bearings are used to ensure minimal downtime and liquid cooling or heating of the stator and rotor components provides excellent thermal control.
