Problem description

Blending pastes inline on a continuous basis is rapidly replacing traditional batch blending in many industries.  The process efficiency and product quality improvements are the main drivers, but existing z-blade mixers, trough mixers and co-kneaders are expensive and difficult to clean.  Their relatively high internal volume also makes rapid batch changeover and cleaning more difficult.

Maelstrom solution

Twin screw extruders have been used for inline blending of viscous pastes for decades.  The closely-self-wiping, co-rotating variant is idea for blending applications, but has traditionally been very expensive as it requires precision engineering to maintain the self-wiping action. Maelstrom's EMT twin screw blending machine uses the same CSCO screw geometry as the expensive alternatives but in a simpler format, making this machine a competitive choice for many blending applications.  Adding a Maelstrom DCL machine to the output of the EMT provides additional, intensive blending action where a greater degree of mixing is needed. The advantages of the EMT mixer over conventional trough and z-blade machines, include:

  • Reliable, pulse-less flow for true inline blending
  • Low internal volume - meaning that waste is minimised for each recipe changeover or shutdown
  • Self-wiping screw action minimises clogging and allows the mixer to handle difficult, sticky pastes
  • Can feed a DCL machine for even greater blending performance
  • Suited to hygienic applications and hazardous environments
