Maelstrom
Awards China FDM License to
Yiyang Rubber & Plastics Machinery Group Co. Ltd. |
|
- Maelstrom FDM mixers now available in China under the Maelstrom
(China) brand |
|
|
| 10th August 2006
- By signing a license agreement for Maelstrom's FDM
technology, China's largest supplier of mixers to the rubber and
plastics industry is now able to manufacture and exclusively supply
FDM mixers to the Chinese market. Using the Maelstrom (China)
brand, FDM mixers will soon be available for a wide range of
industrial applications, not just rubber and plastics. By
building upon Maelstrom's experience in industries such as food,
pharmaceuticals, petrochemicals, paints and coatings, the Maelstrom
(China) brand is expected to make a significant impact in the high
shear mixer market in China. As part of the mighty ChemChina
Group, Yiyang Rubber & Plastics Machinery Group is already part of
one of the China's major suppliers of industrial chemicals.
This will provide a strong platform for launching FDM as the latest
in high shear mixer technology into new chemical and process plants
in China. If
you are based in China, you can obtain more information on
the Maelstrom (China) range of FDM mixers by
contacting
Yiyang Rubber & Plastics Machinery Group Co. Ltd. directly.

Secures Investment for Growth in 2006 |
| - Aggressive
expansion into new international markets |
|
|
| 31st
January 2006
- A new privately placed share issue has raised
significant investment against Maelstrom's business prospects for
growth in 2006. Involvement in major new research projects
in the UK and expansion into new Far Eastern markets are two of
the key aspects of Maelstrom strategy in 2006. Managing
Director Peter Brown said, "this new injection of capital for
expansion gives us the ability to grow much faster than we would
have otherwise and opens up major opportunities for us in new key
markets". |

| DB60-25
Laboratory-scale Distromix Launched |
| - A
general-purpose high shear laboratory mixer for small samples |
|
|
| 1st
November 2004
- Maelstrom is proud to announce the latest addition to
the family of batch Distromix Fluid Division Mixers (FDMs), the
DB60-25. This mixer is an important extension to the range
as it provides users with the high dispersion performance of FDM
technology in fluid volumes down to 200ml. With a 25mm
diameter rotor, and rotational speeds approaching 15,000 rpm, the
DB60-25 is a versatile benchtop lab mixer for most emulsification,
dispersion and de-agglomeration tasks. Simple controls,
digital readouts of both speed and motor load and the option of an
electric raise/lower column make the DB60-25 fast and convenient
to use. |

|
A great
deal of effort has gone into making the DB60-25 easily cleanable
and inspectable, with good access for cleaning and quick
disassembly.
In terms of performance, the
DB60-25 offers all of the benefits of the larger mixers in the
range using the unique FDM hydraulic shearing. Specific
energy delivered to the fluid is higher than seen in conventional
high shear mixers and this translates to smaller particles and
droplets. Scaling of results obtained from the DB60-25 to
production machines is readily achieved using the Maelstrom
scaling models.
For more information on the
DB60-25, please see the DB60-25 specification or contact Maelstrom
directly. Although hire units are not yet available,
Maelstrom is currently offering free trials and demonstrations in
its own laboratory near Manchester, UK or visits with a
demonstrator machine to customer sites within the UK.

| Mixer
Scaling Models Developed |
| - A
new way to accurately predict sizing and scaling for mixers |
|
|
| 23rd
June 2004
- The problem of sizing and scaling industrial mixers
from laboratory or pilot-scale work is one of the biggest
challenges faced by process companies when developing new
production methods. Whilst a great deal of effort has gone
into the theory of sizing of impeller agitators in batch vessels,
the complexity of high shear mixing has eluded accurate
modelling. The result of this is that mixer suppliers and
their customers have had to rely on testing processes at full
scale or guesswork based on previous experience. This is
either expensive or potentially risky. |
 |
Maelstrom
Advanced Process technologies has now developed a solution to this
problem for its own range of Distromix and Integrimix high
performance mixers.
Using a combination of mixing theory and empirical modelling based
on experimental work, a rules-based design guide for sizing
large-scale machines from small-scale tests has been developed for
Distromix and Integrimix machines. |
The
specific energy (energy per unit mass) and flowrate to
achieve the desired mixing result are fed into the
appropriate model together with the machine parameters for
the test unit. The model then predicts a scaled
solution for the required process size. Viscosity
effects and drive power losses are also built in to improve
accuracy.
Although the models are not available for distribution to
customers directly, Maelstrom is now making extensive use of
them in solving customers' problems. With predicted
drive power accuracy of better than +/- 20%, the models are
already proving their worth in saving time and money in the
sizing process.
