Large Mixers

High performance and robust, cleanable designs are the hallmarks of Maelstrom’s large mixer programme. Using proprietary FDM and IPM technologies, the range covers a wide variety of dispersion, homogenisation, blending, de-agglomeration and emulsification tasks for viscosities from water through to pastes.

Mixers in the laboratory range scale easily to the large mixers using predictive models although it is always best to confirm performance in a new application by testing a real machine. We offer three different types of large mixer in the standard range: FDM high shear for general purpose high shear mixing, FDM low shear for gentle inline blending of viscous, shear-sensitive materials and IPM for high performance emulsification.

DB75-200 – FDM batch mixer range

A versatile high shear batch mixer for rapid powder dispersion, de-agglomeration, emulsification and many other uses.

  • 50 litres to 10,000 litre volumes across the entire range
  • Mixer rotor diameters from 75mm to 200mm in 25mm steps
  • 3 mounting options – bridge, hoist or pedestal (vessel mount)

IBV60-100 – IPM batch mixer range

For in-batch nozzle homogenisation and emulsification, the IBV60 and IBV100 extend performance beyond ordinary high shear mixers towards high pressure homogenisation. With self-pumping ability and no-fuss operation, these mixers are the ideal tools for anyone needing nozzle homogenisation directly inside the vessel.

  • 20 litres to 1000 litre volumes across the two sizes
  • Integral positive displacement pumping within the head
  • 3 mounting options – bridge, hoist or pedestal (vessel mount)

DCL100-350 – FDM ultra-low shear range

Based on inter-cavity transfer principles, the DCL range is designed to provide ultra-low shear blending in the laminar flow regime for shear-sensitive materials. The DCL uses the same mixing head geometry as the DC range but has a more rugged construction and geared drive to cope with high viscosity fluids. Typical uses include blending additives into plastics, rubber, chocolate and adhesives.

  • 900 litres/hour to 36000 litres/hour typical flowrate on pastes across the range
  • Speeds typically 50-200 rpm
  • Various mixing head configurations for different mixing effects
  • Double mechanical seal, reverse pumping groove and gland packing options

ICV60-100 – IPM inline mixer range

Between high shear mixer and high pressure homogeniser in terms of performance, the ICV range provides low-cost homogenisation and emulsification of liquid-liquid systems and soft solids. With smaller droplet size and narrower size distribution than high shear mixers and mills of similar throughput and price, ICV is the obvious choice for most emulsification applications.
